What is Spiritually-Integrated Psychotherapy and Counseling

Mind, body, and spirit. This is the traditional view of the human being. Any mental health services should address the mind, body and spirit. This is where Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy comes in. Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy is an approach that addresses the spirituality of an individual and the process of change. Spirituality is defined by author Kenneth Pargament, as “the search for the sacred.” Spirituality is not a congealed or frozen set of beliefs, it is an experiencied reality that is influenced by beliefs and practices. Mental illness often has spiritual implications and is often impacted by one’s spirituality.

Through spiritually integrated psychotherapy individuals can draw from psychological, religious and spiritual perspectives to create and sustain a meaningful purpose in life. There is also space to examine spiritual disconnection and isolation to make meaning out of difficult life events. By facilitating a spiritual meaning making process, a therapist helps those suffering from chronic spiritual and emotional struggles.

Literature shows that spirituality integrated psychotherapies are at least as effective as conventional psychotherapy for treating different mental disorders.

At Lighthouse of Therapy, there is always space for individuals to bring in their spiritually into the therapeutic setting. Beliefs and spiritual practices are not compartmentalized but they are integrated into the therapeutic contexts in a way that brings meaning to you. With experiences working as a spiritual care provider in several Toronto area hospitals, including trauma centres, Manar provides a wholistic mental health support that address your emotional, psychological and spiritual needs.
